Uncle Jim's Room

James E. F. Mann (1903 – 1984) was a character and a great friend of RM Barr-Smith who lived at Mount William as the second-generation owner.  Like RM he went to Cambridge and fought against the Germans in WW2. He was a top sportsman, scoring 114 against Sussex for the Blues (the Cambridge University 1st XI) and reportedly good enough to play cricket for Australia. Before he went to Crete where he was chased by Germans going nine days with just two meals with his friend captured while hiding in a bush.

As a bachelor and frequent guest at Mount William Station, the smaller guest adjoining the now called Chirnside Master guest suite was frequented by Jim Mann so often, the room was coined Uncle Jim’s room.
