Australian beauty and heritage

Since Major Mitchell explored the area and the property was originally established in 1842, Mount William has been witness to an array of interesting pioneering stories. It birthed and stabled the decorated mare, Alice Hawthorn, who ran a match race against New South Wales’ fastest horse, Veno, providing the genesis for the Melbourne Cup. It houses one of the largest woolsheds in Victoria, which at its peak, sheared over one hundred thousand sheep through its twenty four stands.

Guests without a family invitation are welcome for the first time since settlement. There is the option of a luxury stay in the homestead or guests can unwind in the boutique Shearers Quarters.

The Concept

“The world of today is more complex, it moves faster and life’s pressures can be ever-present. I’d like people to feel they’re coming to a place of old-world charm, to feel it’s a home away from home, and their Estate for that moment in time.

Mount William revives the spirit, it fills the soul through its surrounding nature, it nourishes with its local natural produce. My family and our friends have enjoyed this special place for over a century, I’d now like to welcome you to do the same in its next chapter as a destination.

My inspiration for opening Mount William Station as a hotel comes from our own family history. My great grandfather left Adelaide to seek refuge at Mount William Station after returning from Europe after the first world war.  I’d like others to come to Mount William to get away from the city and reset.” - William Abbott
