History Meets Luxury

Barr Smith Master

(colloquially known as Mum's old room)

This large room was traditionally the owner’s room and lodgings. Its thick volcanic bluestone walls quarried in the Western District are part of the original 1860s build having withstood the fire which destroyed most of the original homestead in 1922. It has a private dressing room behind its ensuite bathroom which was called the enigma room. This was an acknowledgment of Mrs. Elizabeth Barr-Smith’s contribution to the Women’s Royal Naval Service (commonly referred to as Wrens) who was involved in decoding as part of the Bletchley Park initiative. Winston Churchill referred to Bletchly Park as “my goose who laid the golden egg and never cackled”.  A beautiful private dressing room with views of the rolling lawns out through the Spanish arches, a perfect hideaway for guests.
